Built with PaceLab

Our scoring is built on Steffan Jones's fast bowling metrics, and PaceLab was our first data partner. Here is what that means for your report.

Every number in a Pitchwolf report sits next to a target. We did not pick those numbers alone. Our scoring is built on the fast bowling metrics of Steffan Jones, the founder of PaceLab, and PaceLab was our first data partner.

Steffan took 387 first-class wickets for Somerset, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire and Kent, and has coached the fast bowlers at the Rajasthan Royals. PaceLab is the fast bowling system he built from that, for juniors up to professionals.

The PaceLab Method

What we built together

  • The measurements: ball speed plus 11 parts of the action, from the run-up to release.
  • The targets: what good looks like for each one, scored out of 10 against bowlers your age.
  • The Pacelab Index: the 11 scores added up into one number out of 110.
  • Hip or knee dominance in the Injury Scan, a way of typing bowlers that Steffan created.

  • Approach33.9 / 40
  • Impact35.9 / 40
  • Delivery24.2 / 30
One real report. Each measurement scores out of 10; the zones add them up, and the total is out of 110.

Where you see it

  • The PaceLab mark next to ours on the cover of your report.
  • Your Pacelab Index, on your dashboard, on every analysis and on your coach's squad pages.
  • Powered by PaceLab on every Injury Scan.
  • Ask Wolf, the assistant in the app, which draws on Steffan's writing on fast bowling.

It works the other way too. PaceLab measures its own bowlers with Pitchwolf, on video filmed the same way every time.
